EcoRoute calculates freight emissions using an activity-based formula expressed in tonne-kilometres (tkm), the industry standard that allows consistent comparison across transport modes. Register freight routes, log shipments, and get CO₂ estimates and carbon quota costs based on emission factors for your transport type, subcategory, and fuel.

How EcoRoute calculates emissions

Every shipment calculation applies the same structure: \( \text{CO}_2 \text{ (kg)} = D_{\text{km}} \times W_{\text{t}} \times EF_{\text{CO}_2} \). Emission factors are drawn from the GLEC Framework v3.2, the industry standard aligned with ISO 14083:2023, and cover road, maritime, and air freight. EcoRoute applies Tank-to-Wheel (TTW) factors across all modes, covering direct combustion emissions, precisely the same scope used by the EU Emissions Trading System. This means the NOK figure returned for each shipment reflects actual allowance exposure, not a broader lifecycle estimate. Every shipment is then converted into a carbon quota cost in Norwegian kroner (NOK).

How the model works

Emission formulas

CO₂ (all transport)

\[ \text{CO}_2 \text{ (kg)} = D_{\text{km}} \times W_{\text{t}} \times EF_{\text{CO}_2} \]

Carbon quota cost

\[ \text{Cost}_{\text{NOK}} = \frac{\text{CO}_2 \text{ (kg)}}{1000} \times 77 \times 11.20 \]

Example calculation

Bergen → Amsterdam · Sea · General cargo, Small · 1,120 km · 0.5 t · HFO

\[ 1{,}120 \times 0.5 \times 0.0203 = 11.37 \text{ kg CO}_2 \]

\[ \text{Cost} = \frac{11.37}{1000} \times 77 \times 11.20 = 9.80 \text{ NOK} \]

Bergen → Amsterdam · Air · Short-haul · 837 km · 0.5 t · Jet A-1

\[ 837 \times 0.5 \times 1.255 = 525.2 \text{ kg CO}_2 \]

\[ \text{Cost} = \frac{525.2}{1000} \times 77 \times 11.20 = 453.0 \text{ NOK} \]

Carbon pricing

Carbon costs are based on the EU ETS: one allowance per tonne CO₂e. The model uses a price of 77 EUR per tonne converted at 11.20 NOK/EUR (rate as of 17 April 2026). All costs are shown in NOK. Emissions and carbon cost are computed at the moment of logging and preserved as a historical record, they are not automatically recalculated if factors or prices change.
